The Greater Private Makalali Game Reserve is a 25000 ha reserve between Hoedspruit and Tzaneen. Multiple landowners have collaborated to create a suitable environment for conservation and tourism for all endemic species. As with many properties the reserve started as former farm lands and most species present have been reintroduced at some point in time. The reserve has most of the species historically found in the area, and we are continually looking into ways to add more, endemic species. The reserve contains a number of commercial lodges, a volunteer center and several private lodges. With a varied landscape, we are fortunate to have a huge variety of species and have been able to support many scientific projects throughout the parks history. Researchers and (under)graduate students may contact us to discuss possibilities of conducting research. In the middle of the reserve we also have our own rehabilitation center, supported by Back to the Wild, from where we have successfully reintroduced many species, bushbabies, gennet, serval, cape clawless otter, caracal and many more. This is completely separate from the tourism side of the reserve and the sole objective is to ensure the animals can be released as soon as they are ready.
