The long-term monitoring of marine mammals in the area was initiated by our founders under the guidance of Africa's leading marine mammal scientists while developing what was to be Africa's first structured wild dolphin encountour programme that funds research and conservation. The Dolphins of Ponta ID project was born in 1997 and through the use of images and video we have been able to catalogue and identify a resident population of bottlenose dolphins and a handful of the endangered humpback dolphins! The project is primarily funded by educational dolphin and whale eco-tourism as well as volunteer projects. It is endorsed by the World Cetacean Alliance and partners with the German Dolphin Society GRD and works closely with NGO’s, operators and the Reserve to ensure that marine mammal tourism is recognised as a stand alone activity that is governed by an ethical and responsible code of conduct.
